In the spirit of ocean conservation, the international non-profit shark and ocean conservation organization, PangeaSeed, in collaboration with the international non-profit shark conservancy group, Shark Angels, is pleased to announce a special holiday encore presentation of PangeaSeed’s The Great West Coast Migration – Art Benefit for Sharks & Oceans. The pioneering art and film festival incorporating the works of over 100 artists and 25 filmmakers spent the summer of 2012 traveling through 6 major cities along the west coast.

And just in time for the holiday season the organizations are pairing up to feature a fun afternoon art and film workshop for kids! This unique two-day educational awareness and fundraising event will take place from Friday, December 14 – Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the Paradiso Arts Studio in Santa Monica, California, and is tailored to address one the biggest threats facing the health of the world’s oceans, the rapid mass depletion of sharks.

Each year, up to 73 million sharks are killed. According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 1/3 of all shark and ray species are now threatened with extinction. In just a few decades, some regional shark populations have declined by over 95%, and their populations continue to decline, mostly due to the demand for shark fin soup. Sharks are literally being eaten into extinction during our lifetimes.

Together, PangeaSeed and Shark Angels share a common goal: To expand the public’s knowledge of the inhumane practice of shark finning and its deep impact on the health of our oceans.

The entire event is geared towards celebrating sharks through film, music, media and art. In addition to the unique art exhibition, the group will be hosting evening activities including DJs, special celebrity guests and shark-focused activities for the opening reception Friday December 14 from 7 – 11pm. Youngsters can get involved during an interactive children’s art workshop on Saturday December 15 from 2 – 5pm with gallery times from 1 – 6pm.

A selection of award-winning short films will also be screened Saturday, December 15th from 7 – 10pm as part of the Ocean Love Film Series. These films highlight some of the world’s most pressing marine-related issues ranging from the devastation caused by overfishing to the negative impact of plastics on our oceans and the effects of pollution throughout the world.

Shark-related holiday gifts will also be available for purchase.

Come join us and help celebrate the beauty and importance of sharks! This is a public event with a suggested donation at the door which includes one drink and raffle ticket for a chance to win some very special shark goodies!
